The Associate of Arts Degree in Health Care Administration with a
concentration in Billing and Coding is a comprehensive 16-month program that
teaches health care administration and billing and coding and offers
students a general introduction to a wide array of health care concepts. The
curriculum includes basic computer operations and applications. This degree
program also includes a general education component.
The objectives of the AA in Health Care Administration with a
concentration in Billing and Coding are as follows:
To provide students with
comprehensive knowledge of the major components of the modern health care
industry.
To ensure that students understand the
terms, language, and jargon of the medical and health care administration
fields.
To provide courses, knowledge, and
skill sets that will help students acquire the confidence and ability to
handle day-to-day administrative and organizational activities in a health
care setting.
To provide students with an
understanding and appreciation of the importance of customer service in
health care administration.
To provide students with an
understanding of the importance of compliance due to the increased
regulation of the health care field.
To provide students internships in
actual health care settings for the purpose of learning to apply skills and
techniques taught in the classroom to real world situations.
To teach students the importance of
information in health care decision making.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of coding
conventions, terms and abbreviations.
Code ambulatory surgery procedures,
radiological procedures, laboratory and pathology procedures, and medical
procedures utilizing CPT codes.
Code Disease and procedures according
to ICD-CM guidelines.
Relate the importance of diagnostic
and procedural coding to physician reimbursement.
Enumerate and understand basic billing
and insurance procedures;
Understand the basic features of
hospital billing, physician billing, ancillary service billing, and
diagnostic test billing.
To provide general education courses
for the purposes of enhancing students intellectually knowledge and growth
in order to become well rounded citizens both in the work environment and in
their communities.
To teach students fundamentals of
computer operations and applications.
The concentration in Billing and
Coding helps students build current skills in this ever changing field of
health care. This concentration teaches students how to successfully
coordinate between patients, doctors, and insurance companies. This is very
critical area in the health care field because coding and billing deals with
revenue collection for the health care facilities. The program is designed
to prepare students for employment in Billing and Coding for the full range
of entry level positions available in health care field including hospitals
and physician offices. Some of the examples of establishments where these
entry level positions will be available include public and private
hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, offices of physicians,
offices of dentists, home healthcare services, outpatient care centers, and
ambulatory healthcare services.
The program is also designed to provide a foundation in basic health
care fundamentals for those students who choose to further their education
by continuing for the Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration.
