III. SEARCHING FOR ARTICLES IN PROQUEST
Selecting Resources in ProQuest
You may search in "Multiple Databases" or ask the search engine to obtain articles from "ProQuest Health Management" or "Criminal Justice Periodicals," using the dropdown menu.
Note: The library recommends students and faculty in the Criminal Justice degree program set the drop down menu to "Social Sciences - Criminal Justice Periodicals," as shown below, to best target and yield articles in your field.
Performing a Search:
You may search with one word or with two words as shown, when necessary. The example below shows a search for an article on Kaiser Permanente's marketing. Neither search word alone will express the topic for the search engine; two search terms are needed.
To obtain complete articles, place a check mark into the small box for "Full text documents only." This is to avoid receiving mostly indexes, tables of contents, or abstracts, instead of articles you can read.
The "Advanced" option (not shown) allows searching for citations, author, publication title, company, NAICS code, subject, or other methods. To use the "Advanced" option, you would press the "Advanced" tab.
The database will give article title results which you can click to read the article. The database will often give more specific subject headings, which you can further browse.
Here is an example below of a periodical article in ProQuest with an abstract (summary of article) plus the full text of the article.
You can print, email, copy the article link, or cite the article. Use the links under "Document View."
Do not mark the article. It may not be saved.
To save articles electronically, you can send an email to yourself (no attachments required) or you can copy a link of the article into your own computer files. Try these tools out!
The next series of screen shots shows a search for an article research on topics in criminal justice.
Use two words in your search as shown, when necessary to better define your search.
If you set the drop down menu for the library database major for your professional field, you will limit and focus your results on your major field. This will help particularly when you choose to browse the results.
Evaluate title results, and click on a hyperlinked title suitable for your research, or browse and click the subheadings, to view additional results.
Excerpt of article page is shown here.
To begin a citation in ProQuest resources, press the hyper link, "Cite this" below "Document view."
A citation will readily pop up, as shown below. Use the citation style required by your professor. ProQuest has a drop down menu to choose.
V. READING YOUR FAVORITE PERIODICAL IN PROQUEST DATABASES
While some people prefer using a search engine to find articles from many periodicals, some people prefer to browse and read one periodical or issue. To do this, you can press the "Publications" tab in any ProQuest database.
Type in the title of the periodical or journal you want to read, or browse for a title. When you look at the list, choose a title from the list which is defined as Full Text and is current.
You can search for an article title or author within the periodical or journal, or you can click a hyperlink for a specific magazine issue date, as shown in the screenshots below.
You can choose and click any of the article title results for the issue of the periodical chosen.
You may choose to create an RSS feed to deliver online articles from the periodical, if you particularly like or need the articles.
Sample article: Note you can print, email, or cite the article. Do not "mark" the article; it may not be saved. Instead, email to yourself or others, or copy the article link into your own research files.
