Online FAQs

Here are questions that prospective students have about LA College and online degree schools.

Q: Why should I take an online course?

A: Online learning is convenient, flexible, and affordable, especially when you factor in the value of your time. Studying from the convenience of home, on your schedule, opens up whole new worlds of possibility without disrupting your current life. There is no need to abandon your current job security or income. Take your courses during your lunch and dinner breaks or at other times that fit your schedule.

Q: Don’t you learn more in a classroom than in an online degree school?

A: No. One reason is you are not just passively listening to a lecture; you are actively engaged in and interacting within the course. In addition, students have more time to think about their answers, and everyone has an equal opportunity to participate. In a traditional classroom, it is possible for two or three students to dominate the classroom and get the majority of the instructor’s attention.

Q: I’ve never taken an online course. Is it just text on a computer screen?

A: No, far from it. Our online format provides a richer learning environment than traditional classrooms. A typical online degree school classroom is passive—the instructor just lectures while students are required to memorize and recite information. Online is interactive with some courses offering audio and video to engage you every step of the way. You will not only learn, you will have fun doing it!

Q: Will I be learning on my own?

A: As an LA College International student, you are part of a highly connected online community that includes friends and faculty from all over the country. Everyone is connected and everyone participates. Students receive instruction customized to the dynamics of online learning and one-on-one feedback from your instructor. With our online format, you can stay in close contact with your classmates and counselors, and build lasting relationships

Q: I have been to college before. When and how will I be notified of transfer credit I’ve received?

A: LA College International will order transcripts from your previous institution upon receipt of your Transfer Request forms. Students presenting transcripts from any accredited agency recognized by the United States Department of Education will be given a course-by-course evaluation to determine the amount of transfer credit that can be awarded. In cases where students will be taking classes containing a specific prerequisite requirement, the transferring student will be required to take and complete those prerequisite classes. The student will be notified via email about credits that can be applied to your LA College degree program.

Q: How will I receive my textbooks and other learning materials?

A: Students will receive information about how to download the texts. Not all courses have an eText option. For those courses requiring a hard copy book, texts are shipped directly to you from our distributor and should arrive the week prior to the start of the course. Other learning materials are available in the classroom and the LA College library.

Q: How long will it take me to complete my degree?

A: Your time to completion of your degree will depend upon how many credits are required and how many you complete in each academic year. Many students take an average of 24 credits (8 courses) during each 36 week Academic Year. Please contact Admissions for a comprehensive and personalized evaluation of your academic program.

Q: Are there graduation ceremonies at LA College?

A: Yes, LA College has an annual graduation ceremony in Los Angeles, CA. The College will keep you updated as you prepare for graduation.
