

ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA
The Encyclopedia Britannica Academic Online has almost 100,000 encyclopdia articles found in the print edition, as well as Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesuarus, a world atlas, some videos, and Internet web sites selected by the Encyclopedia Britannica staff.
This guide offers step-by-step directions how to access and search the Encyclopedia, as well as use the workspace to save articles.
Or, use your intuition, and explore Encycloedia Britannica to experience additional features not mentioned in this guide.
You can enter the online Encyclopedia Britannica at the Library forum site in Moodle. No pass code is needed to enter the Encyclopedia, once you log in to Moodle.
You may also enter the "Encyclopedia Britannica Academic Online" hyperlink on the library home page, www.lac.edu/library, where you will be prompted to log in to Moodle, to reach the Encyclopedia in the library room in Moodle.

Before performing serious research, you may press the "Create Workspace" button shown below, to create your personal bookshelf, called a workspace in Encyclopedia Britannica.
Fill out the form and execute. Enter your email on the form with Encyclopedia Britannica, in case you lose your password. The email you enter in the form will be your username during log in.
Once you have filled out the form, you will have a blank workspace. You can search and save new articles, and you can also save your own work (not including e-books from Ebrary.)
You can search either Encyclopedia Britannica, Merriam-Webster dictioary, or other sources and features.
Merriam-Webster dictionary:
To search Merriam-Webster dictionary, look for the search box located on the lower-right side of the web page. It is indicated in this screen shot with a blue arrow. Enter word for definition, as indicated below.
Article from Merriam-Webster's dictionary inside the Encyclopedia defines the term you entered into the dictionary.
Encyclopedia articles:
Encyclopedia articles provide more comprehensive information on a topic, name, place, or thing.
You can browse topics A-Z (not shown here), browse the special features (also not shown here), or use the search box on top to search for topics.
After you enter your search term, opportunities to choose related subjects will appear.
This example shows the basic choice, "Abortion," after the cursor of the mouse is moved over that topic. Links are provided to parts of the artice, to which you can open.
Click on topic to see article full page with available images.
The bottom of the article web page contains links to articles related to your topic (not shown), as well as links to external web sites.
IV. CITATIONS IN ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA
Encyclopedia Britannica has citations at the very bottom of its articles. The LAC Style is similar to the APA style.
However, when you obtain citations from Encyclopedia Britannica, check the citation to make sure it conforms with the LAC Style. Online students can find the LAC Style Guide in My Tool Kit in Moodle.
Short notes, such as (Hudson, 2009) inside the body of the paper, still have to be created to give credit to the author(s).
Online students are encouraged to consult a tutorial on short notes and citations, "Citations and References Format in Microsoft Word" in My Toolkit in Moodle. Students say it is a time-saver!
V. SAVING ARTICLES TO PERSONAL WORKSPACE
You can save articles from your research into your personal workspace. To do this, press "Save" above the article you want to save.
enter the project name.
Then, press "Done." Article is saved in your workspace. You can return to your article in a later session.
VI. TO LOG IN & RETURN TO PERSONAL WORKSPACE
You can return to your workspace to find articles you have saved already, after creating your workspace beforehand.
Here are the details how to log in to your workspace in Encyclopedia Britannica. There are two methods:
Method 1:
Enter your username (It's the email address registered with Encyclopedia.) in the first box indicated by arrow, below. Enter your password in second box, indicated by second arrow.
Press "remember me" for your personal computer (only) to remember your username.
Then, press link with your name to reach your workspace.
(If you do not yet see links to your saved articles, press "Workspace" button at left.)
Open this link to finish the rest.
Method 2:
Press "Create Workspace" area with your mouse.
In the window that appears below, press where indicated below, to log in.
A new window will pop up on your screen. Enter your email (username) and password. Use the email address you registered with Encyclopedia Britannica when you set up your workspace. Press "Login" button.
(If you do not yet see links to your saved articles, but you see this screen below instead, press "Workspace" button at left.)
Links to articles saved before will appear. Press "Open." (You may also share or delete the article.)
Next, press "View This Article" button to view article from the workspace.
You can return to the workspace to see Encyclopedia articles, dictionary definitions, images, and other items, at a later session to continue your research project. Also use Ebrary and LIRN for your research.
