I.  ACCESSING PROQUEST

1)  Use the Library forum site in Moodle to access ProQuest; click on the Proquest hyperlink as shown below.

2)  You may also access ProQuest on the LAC Library web page, www.lac.edu/library.  Click on the ProQuest hyperlink, "ProQuest Health Management and Criminal Justice."  You will be prompted to log in to Moodle, to access ProQuest in the Library room in Moodle.

II.  SEARCHING FOR ARTICLES IN PROQUEST

Selecting Resources in ProQuest

Click on the picture or hyperlink for your major.

(Note:  Business Management majors can enter LIRN, for LIRN's business resources.)

Performing a Search:   CJ Search Example - HCA Search Example

This series of screen shots shows a search for article research on topics in health care administration.

Before you begin using the search engine, place a checkmark into the little box for full text only with your mouse (left button), to limit your results to complete articles which you can use.

Now, enter your search words.  If just one search word does not express a search for your topic, two search terms are needed.  ProQuest's new search engines display Google-style subjects after you begin, and this can help your search!

The example below shows a search for an article on health care costs.

(Note:  If the Google-style subjects do not help with your search, use your own search words, with exact phrases in quote marks, ie. "nursing shortage" AND care.)

Next, results of article titles will display, as shown below.   Evaluate title results.

(Just to help you decide upon articles, you may move your mouse cursor over "Preview" to review abstracts or summaries, before opening complete article.  Icons with graduating cap indicate scholarly journal article.)

Click on a hyperlinked title you need; click on "Full text" under article title to use complete article for your research.

Here is an example below of part of a periodical article in ProQuest.  Both the abstract and the full text of the article are shown below.

To save article, obtain citation, or share in social media, use the blue area above the article title, as shown above.

This series of screen shots shows a search for article research on topics in criminal justice.

After logging in, choose the Criminal Justice database on the opening page, as shown.

Before you use the search engine, place a checkmark into the little box for full text only with your mouse (left button), to limit your results to complete articles which you can use.

Enter your search words, for example, "Police AND Personnel." Using two words, as shown, also better defines a search.  ProQuest's search engine will also now display Google-style subjects, which can help you refine your search!

(Note:  If the Google-style subjects do not help with your search, use your own search words, with exact phrases in quote marks, ie. "national security".  Or use two words in one concept, such as rehabilitation AND criminals.)

Next, results of article titles will display, as shown below.   Evaluate title results.

(Just to help you decide upon articles, you may move your mouse cursor over "Preview" to review abstracts or summaries, before opening complete article.  Icons of the graduation hat indicate scholarly journal articles.)

Click on a hyperlinked title you need; click on "Full text" under article title to use use complete article for your research.

Excerpt of article page is shown here.  Both the abstract and the full text of the article are shown below.

To save article, to obtain citation, or to share in social media, use the blue area above the article title.

III.  SHARING - SOCIAL MEDIA

To post ProQuest articles in Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other social media, you can use your mouse to move your cursor over "share" as shown.  Try the "More" button and access hundreds of additional media, A-Z, to look for your service.

IV.  SAVING ARTICLES

After you find articles you want for your research, there are several ways to save your articles:&

You may print article.
You can save an article as a PDF or web file to your computer.
You can email an article to yourself, classmates, or colleagues (Fill out the form, not shown),

You may want to save your articles in "MyResearch" on ProQuest, before exporting these articles to your research folder in your computer, if you are using many articles in ProQuest

After you find an article to keep, place mark and click "Add to My Research."  (When you first aim to mark and save article this way, you will be able to create a "My Research" account and create your own username and password.  You'll be able to see saved articles in ProQuest by clicking "My Research" as shown.

An alternative is to save articles directly to your computer or email articles to your email address.

V.  CITATIONS IN PROQUEST

You can also generate a citation for the article.  Set drop down menu for APA (6th Edition) as shown.

A citation of your article will readily pop up, as shown below.

When you obtain citations from ProQuest, check the citation to conform with the LAC Style Guide.  Online students can find the LAC Style Guide in My Tool Kit in Moodle.  The LAC Style is similar to the APA, 6th Edition.

Short notes, ie. (Hudson, 2009), still have to be created to give credit to the author(s) in the body of your paper.

Online students may see a tutorial on short notes and citations, "Citations and References Format in Microsoft Word" in My Toolkit in Moodle.  Students say it is a time-saver!
